Chainsaw Devil Review

Hello! I just got done reading Part 1 of Chainsaw Man, and WOW...I gotta talk about it. Now theres a lot to talk about but for this page I'm just gonna talk about some of my favorite devils

BIG BIG BIG SPOILERS FOR PART 1! ANIME ONLIES TURN AROUND NOW!

10.Tomato

One of the first devils we see, the Tomato Devil is pretty interesting. Now devils only exist because people fear them. I think of the Tomato Devil a lot... why are people scared of tomatoes? Maybe people are scared of tomatoes being thrown at them after a bad performance? So is this devil really the fear of failure? But that’s a pretty big fear which would make this devil is way too powerful for Denji to simply kill with no powers...

Anyways, I love the design of this guy! I love that the eyes themselves look like tomatoes with the leaves on top! The human arms as legs are another nice touch. Maybe if I got attacked by this guy I would be afraid of tomatoes too. You can probably just eat this guy though...put him with a nice salad mmmm

9.Zombie

Another devil we meet in the first chapter! You know, if it wasn't for this guy killing Denji, we wouldn't have Chainsaw Man. Thank you, Zombie Devil!

As you would expect, this devil can turn people into zombies and uses this ability to build a massive gang. We've all seen media where zombies quickly take over and destroy the world and honestly, I can easily imagine an alternate Chainsaw Man series where he just fights through a world controlled by this devil.

8.Future

Yeah, this guy is pretty neat. I love his weird half-tree half-man design that’s all tied together with the big eye in his chest. Also, this guy just has a great personality!

Despite not being outwardly aggressive its made pretty clear that he still doesn't care too much for humans, as the only reason he stuck around with Aki was because he was excited to see how his life ends. But idk, I'd still be friends with this guy

7.Shark

I think we live in an age where people have a generally positive opinion of sharks, which is great because sharks are genuinely amazing animals! So it’s no surprise that one of the coolest characters is Beam the shark fiend. I’m really sorry for having him so low on the list, but as much as I love the shark devil design, there’s just others I like a lot more. May the shark gods forgive me!

First time, I saw this form I instantly thought of the shark from Junji Itos Gyo. Maybe Fujimoto took some inspiration?

6.Ghost

From culture to culture, there’s been millions of ways people have depicted ghosts. The most common way is a pale transparent figure or maybe some invisible force that throws objects. Fujimoto looked at that and said "No thanks!" and created one of the coolest monster designs I have ever seen!

The stitched face! The flower neck! The gazillion arms! It’s perfect! One feature that the ghost devil has that’s similar to many ghosts, is its long scraggly black hair and the many hands reminds me of ghost alley from Diamond is Unbreakable. And anything that reminds me of Jojo is an instant favorite! Except for prison, I guess

5.Doll/Darkness

Im gonna be real for a second. I’m seriously afraid of dolls. From porcelain to Barbie, I just hate these things. So when I heard about the doll devil I knew I was gonna be in for a treat. Now you probably noticed this is titled Doll/Darkness and not just "Doll" and that’s because I'm specifically talking about the moment when the doll devil/santa claus eats some of the flesh of the Darkness Devil and turns into this

I love this SO MUCH! It embodies everything that freaks me out about dolls. From the blank face to the creepy jointed limbs, everything about this design just makes me go !!!

Which is perfect because its what I want from creatures who are powered by fear :D

4.Angel

Good question. We haven't gotten confirmation about angels existing in this world so we just have to assume that there’s enough fear of angels for there to be an angel devil. Kinda weird, right? Angels are usually depicted as these beings of ultimate good. Maybe it’s because angels are also associated with being taken to Heaven (aka dying). Whatever the reason, Angel Devil has not just become one of my favorite devils but one of my favorite Shonen characters.

Let’s start with his design. When people first see Angel, they find it hard to guess his gender correctly. Even Denji thought he was a girl. I think that works pretty well having an angel character have an ambiguous gender. Like, would a super powerful heavenly being even concern themselves with gender presentation?

Now let’s talk about his abilities! I don't think I've ever seen a power like this before. Being able to absorb lifespans and then using that energy from the lifespans is pretty cool and I can see it becoming super op in the hands of the wrong person. Luckily Angel is just interested in getting some ice cream!

3.Control

OH MAN! WOW! WOWOWOWOWOWOOWW!

That was a sample of my reaction to the end of part 1. I have seen some villains, and I have seen some antagonists, but I don’t think I have ever witnessed a villain like Makima aka the Control devil! From the first time we meet her it’s clear that she’s up to something but still seems to be mostly interested in her work at Public Safety. Every time she appeared on screen I felt worried but then felt stupid for being worried. Clearly, she’s just a very creepy but overall normal human. Ya know, if you ignore all the manipulation that is. That was until a certain scene in the Katana arc

This moment perfectly highlights what’s so scary about Makima at the start. We know very little about her background, her powers, and her contracts, but what we do know is that she’s insanely powerful. I remember at this moment almost feeling a bit for the guys here. Like imagine just randomly seeing your allies just explode.

I could probably write a whole essay on Makima, but this isn’t the time so let’s move on!

2.Chainsaw

IT’S HIM! THE GUY! ON THE COVER AND TITLE!! CHAINSAW GUY

Look at him he’s perfect, the very design is the reason I got into this in the first place. I thought it was simultaneously the goofiest and most badass thing I've ever seen. I mean the guy literally has chainsaws shooting out of his arms! But hey! If I can take Spiderman seriously I can take Chainsaw Man seriously.

Now the Chainsaw devil is pretty interesting, first off it can take on a weak dog-like form (our baby Pochita) and then the big scary Chainsaw devil form. We then of course have the hybrid form with Denji but this isn’t about him (no hate though, I wish him nothing but the best in part 2). Then we have the devil’s abilities. We got the regular chainsaw stuff but then also the ability to eat a devil thus erasing the devil and its associated fear out of existence. This is OP as hell but in a good way and I'm very interested to see what they do with this power in part 2.

Also before reading this, I was REALLY hoping he would say "Its sawin time!" at least once, but oh well...

Blood

Did you think that Chainsaw Devil was just gonna be #1 just because the series is called Chainsaw Man? WRONG! This is the #1 SPOT and it’s reserved for the most powerful, most awesome, coolest devil ever!

Listen, my first impression of Power aka Blood Devil was "Oh boy...a comic relief character!" and I thought that was all she was going to be. I was a fool and I look back at those times with nothing but shame. She’s more than just funny! She's strong, the coolest! She’s the president of Japan! She won a Nobel Peace Prize!

Ok but for real, Power really exceeded my expectations for her especially at the end of part 1. That moment when she could've easily handed Denji over to Makima but then chose to help him even though it went against her instincts... that just got me!

And damn... here death hit me pretty hard. It was quick, brutal, and legit leaving me in shock, which is probably how Denji felt in that moment. At least I wasn’t the one who opened the door though!

Now to talk more about the actual devil design, I obviously like it! You have a humanoid body that almost looks normal until you get to the guts bursting out of the chest to form a neck. Also in this form, her head kinda looks like a weird cat, which is also exactly what Power acts like in general.

Also wasn't it so cool when Power brought Denji that cake and literally nothing bad happened and they both went home and Aki was there and-

Anyways, thats it! Im very exicted to get my own copy of volume 12 but sadly I gotta wait until this October! But from what I've heard, Part 2 of Chainsaw man is still amazing so maybe I'll make another devil review.
